I’m still very new to running, but I’ve created a page for it here, mostly because I’m hoping to make it stick. On December 7, 2009 I started running. In fact, I’m “in training” for the Superbowl Sunday 5k race in Novi, Michigan – runsuperbowl.com. I started with a commitment to run 5k each weekday (about 3.1 miles) at my local gym – Planet Fitness.
My first run times were just over 43 minutes (which averages out to about a fast walk) but my current time is down to under 25 minutes! However, in the last few weeks I’ve learned a lot about running. For one, there is a big difference between running on a treadmill versus running outside. It sets your pace, it rebounds softer on your joints, and really makes running easier. Secondly, if you’re training to run an outside race in February, you’d better train outside!
So, starting Christmas day, I’ve been running outside. I’ve learned there is NO WAY I could run outside right five days a week! So I’ve changed up the routine a little bit, rather than 3 miles 5 days a week, I’m doing 5 miles 3 days a week! Even with this change I’m still noticing a lot more wear and tear on my ankles than on the treadmill, but i’m grinding through it!
As of New Years Eve, I decided I’ll be keeping running around for awhile. One of my four official resolutions for 2010: To place in the top 2% of an official 5K race. I’m really hoping for a huge turnout at the Superbowl Sunday Race, as I think I’ve got a lot better odds with in a larger race. But we’ll see how it goes!
Check back here to see my progress!
